For many substances , the exposure occurs transcutaneously that is to say through the skin.

The cutaneous absorption in vitro to measure the absorption of a test substance after its application to the surface of a skin sample Cells in static or dynamic scattering can be used.

The skin is placed between a donor compartment and a receiver compartment of a diffusion cell. It has been shown that the skin can metabolize certain chemicals for dermal absorption. At various specific time during a given period (usually 24 hours), the receptor fluid is analyzed and the concentration of the test substance or its metabolites is determined.

Normally, several concentrations of the test substance are used in standard formulations, to cover a realistic range of potential human exposures.
